Production zones are based on the municipalities of León (chiefly) and Valladolid. The official agency designates locations of sufficient quality apt for the production of authorized grape varieties and their corresponding wines.

Irrigation:
1. Vines less than 2 years of age may be irrigated at any time of
the year.
2. The following general conditions apply to vineyards with regards
to irrigation:
2.1. Irrigation is permitted before July 31 of each year.
2.2. El Consejo Regulador will give authorization for vineyard
irrigation after July 31, once the vineyard has requested it, and
once the Regulador has determined that drought conditions
exist.
2.3. Drought conditions will be declared when rainfall of the
current year is less than 75% of the average rainfall of the
previous 10 years, keeping the same meteorlogical station
measurements as points of reference over the period.
Nevertheless, when a vineyard owner presents demonstrable evidence
of drought on his parcel, irrigation may be authorized.
2.4. Maximum irrigation levels permitted are to be the exact
amounts needed to reach the average rainfall levels for the
zone.
2.5. In any case, the Consejo Regulador may modify the irrigation
dates for justifiable technical reasons. The Regulador must
follow artículo 5 de la Ley 8/2005, de 10 de junio, de la Viña y
del Vino de Castilla y León, y artículo 12 de Reglamento de esta
Ley, aprobado por Decreto 51/2006, de 20 de julio.
2.6. The production zones should be divided into homogenous
irrigation zones, based on authorization and available
meteorlogical data.
3. Irrigation is to be done locally by drip or some similar method.
In some pre-determined cases, the Consejo Regulador will
authorize aspersion irrigation, both blanket and/or trough.
4. El Consejo Regulador will establish specific criteria to apply
per each campaign based on the requirements of the situation.
